Get started with motion UI design

Getting Started with Motion UI Design (part 1) How can change the way you design!

Our work today mainly falls into two categories: product design and product vision. For our product design projects, we work on existing products or platforms and design for short launches. We share detailed designs and prototypes regularly with our customers to get the best products for the end customer.

What a product vision job, product discovery, or a platform might look like in 2-5 years. The details are less important than presenting a vision of the future. The end audience for this job is often an executive with limited time but the ability to make strategic decisions will allow the product team to pursue creative work.

When dealing with complex product types, a motion design can be a great tool for organizing large teams around a core concept. We’ve found that being faster and more efficient with our tools helps solve problems holistically. In this tutorial, I’ll share a little bit about how to step up your workflow to make motion an integral part of the design process. Over time, I have even found that I will use After Effects as the first tool on a project, as it can be one of the fastest ways to sketch out the structure of a product.

There’s no shortage of great motion design and after effects resources out there, and I’ll share my favorites here (and in this handy link pack). However, I found one of the challenges in developing a motion skill UI set was to build a workflow and tooling that would have you working and iterating faster.

This is not a how-to, but rather a blueprint of my favorite techniques, tools, and tutorials to help you develop your own practice. Some familiarity with After Effects is helpful, but I’ll also show you resources to help you start over.

Setting Up Your Photoshop File Organize Your Files Before Moving To After Effects

If I was just producing quick motion concepts, then I would sketch the user interface using solids and shapes in After Effects. But for slick design, I always start in Photoshop. That is, the most direct fastest way to get an animated design quickly. If you primarily use a Sketch, there are workarounds that involve Illustrator, but I’ll focus on Photoshop here.

There are two simple but important things to know when setting up your Photoshop file:

  1. A layer or smart object in Photoshop becomes a layer in After Effects
  2. A group of layers or smart objects in Photoshop becomes a layer component in After Effects

To make your After Effects Timeline manageable, you’ll want as few layers and compositions as possible. To do this, you’ll need to start visualizing what motion the element requires. Consider the following as you organize:

This is a tedious process with no specific rules, but with enough experience you’ll learn how to quickly and efficiently organize your classes and groups for your unique needs.

Always Select Section – Keep the Size Layer and Layer Styles Editable. This imports your file as a composition, including access to any layer styles you have selected in Photoshop. Here, organization is important. After Effects doesn’t play nice with lost files, and you don’t want to waste precious time re-linking files. To save yourself a headache:

Keep your project boards in After Effects organized. As soon as I start importing, I start organizing. Create a folder _Layers and add your Layers folder in Photoshop – you’ll rarely need to refer to this, mostly just for reloading or concatenating files. I moved my imported files to a _Comps folder.

Finally, you’ll want to tailor your Part Settings for your purposes. When working entirely with digital assets, and without video, I set up the components as follows:

Generally, we offer 1080p video. Setting the Frame Rate to 60 FPS provided a smooth animation and choosing Square Pixels ensured our Photoshop files appeared 1:1 in After Effects.
